Experimental Method
Cone calorimeter [6]
Before new extinguishing systems can be installed they have to first be tested to prove that they are fit for purpose, the testing also highlights any faults in the system so that these can be rectified before the system is installed. If this testing is not done correctly it could put life and property at risk with faulty systems. It could also cause financial losses if a problem is found after installation and a re-design of the system is needed to replace the faulty system. Due to this the details of the experimental method needed to properly test these extinguishing systems are vital. The test needs multiple requirements, it has to be fair for all types of system, representative of the challenges on an aircraft, economically viable, safe to perform, and able to compare the results from different systems. If the experimental method is not properly performed then faults in the system could be missed.
The problem is to determine if there are any faults or room for improvement in the current experimental method being used to test these systems. Once this is done suggestions of how to improve the experimental method can be suggested. This will be one of the main problems which shall be investigated in this thesis.
